We strive for the most environmentally friendly solutions possible in the procurement of mineral aggregate resources.
Already at the planning stage we give consideration to the areas possible post-service use, for example as a recreational area or future construction site for local industry. The site can also be returned to agricultural or forestry use by means of land acquisitions and plantings.
With gravel resources becoming more scarce, the use of crushed aggregate as a substitute material for natural gravel is recommended in order to conserve glacial moraine formations that are important for the groundwater. Crushed rock already accounts for two-thirds of our mineral aggregate production. We also crush reclaimed asphalt, recycled concrete and surplus excavated spoil for reuse.
We operate nationwide from about 150 mineral aggregate extraction sites, each of which requires a separate extraction permit. There is a notification procedure if quarrying and crushing operations take place less that 50 days per year; otherwise an environmental permit is required.
We have reduced noise and dust pollution by enclosing conveyors, renewing sprinkling equipment, and locating plants so that landscape features act as noise barriers. In order to prevent oil leaks and protect the groundwater, storage containers for oil products and the recycling of hazardous wastes have been made for our crushing plants. All of our plants have oil-absorbent materials and initial fire extinguishing equipment. Our personnel have received training in how to respond to emergency situations.
We participate in the sectors development projects, actively monitor events in the sector, and provide annual training to our personnel in the management of environmental issues.
